If one of the first things that pops up when you get on an online chat line of any of the AFL's clubs (most notably in an anonymous voice on a sports talk radio show) is "What has happened to the Giants?" it's likely to be a lot more simple than we like to think. It was just five days ago that a small contingent of fans from the north-west of Melbourne were left stunned and confused by this, when the Giants were trounced by the Brisbane Lions.

The first result was a 35-point loss to Melbourne at the MCG. The Lions came in, led by captain Daniel Wells with eight goals and eight assists (although his last goal went back on his head, when he was knocked clear on the ground by veteran defender Luke Jackson in the corner).

But the Lions looked to be back on track after that defeat. They were then upset by the Carlton, again led by Jack Redden with eight goals and seven assists.

The Lions again fell at home to North Melbourne last night and were forced to sit out the game after being outplayed by Fremantle. They have lost five of their last five games against Fensom and have also been humiliated by Melbourne at home.

So what happened in those five games to cause such sudden panic? Perhaps it's because the first goal was against Collingwood on Saturday. If they had had any momentum the next time they played, they may have won that match. But by Sunday the Lions were a shell of what they had looked like during their pre-season, and then a week later they were beaten by the Geelong Cats at home.

Well, we're pretty sure that there was not much to it.

The reason seems to be that the Lions were so desperate to improve their attack last year that they changed the way they defended their line-up with a mix of speed and power from the middle. They started with just six skaters in the last 12 games, and had already taken eight points away from Hawthorn.

What we're seeing now is a return to that approach again. That's one factor for why so many have already started to speak openly about the Giants as having "lost their way".

The other factor has to do with the fact that they don't really play as quickly as we remember, and have found it hard to compete in their smaller environments.

It's very easy to point out the glaring weakness in the Giants' style, however.

New agribusiness council to help get government off ag's throats

The federal Agriculture Department's top official is resigning over a new deal between the ag industry and the administration that will make it easier to shut down thousands of farms.

The contract to supply government-run ethanol producers was announced as the Obama administration negotiated a new deal with corn producers. It has angered agribusiness, which is concerned that the policy could drive more farmers off the food chain to China, with potential negative consequences for local communities.

Agribusiness Council of North America chief executive officer Michael Greaney said Thursday that under the new agreement, the Agriculture Department would provide $2 billion to $3 billion to support efforts to help farmers "ensure the health and sustainability of their lands and communities."

Agribusiness was disappointed by the deal because the provision did not set clear boundaries or specific limits on how much financial support would be given, Greaney said.

"We are deeply disappointed and angry, and believe that in our long history of collaboration and collaboration, the Agriculture Department has played a central role in ensuring farmers across America are part of the decision-making process on where their crop resources lie and how they make informed decisions about their business," Greaney said in a statement.

The Agriculture Department and corn farmers reached a tentative agreement late Wednesday, with the Obama administration taking a small, two-year loan for corn, a staple crop for U.S. farmers, as opposed to the 10-year plan it had proposed, said Tom Cates, a spokesman for the National Corn Growers Association. Agribusiness's share of corn production under the agreement would be increased to 9 percent for 2016 from 8.75 percent, he said.

A federal government source said the announcement was "not unexpected" and not linked to the ag trade pact.

But the provision appeared to anger a number of other industries. The trade agreement was expected to be reached by April.
